In 2022, obesity was associated with 9,509 fatalities in Belgium, making up 8.2 percent of the country’s overall mortality, according to recent figures from the Belgian public health institute Sciensano. This marks the inaugural effort by health researchers in Belgium to systematically quantify deaths directly attributable to a high body mass index (BMI). The report indicates that weight-related health issues caused more than one death every hour across the nation. Additionally, the data shows that elevated BMI resulted in over 150,000 years of life lost within a single year across all demographic groups.
EU health groups seek binding heat protection as Europe strengthens climate resilience planning. HEAL says national Heat Health Action Plans should contain ambitious, measurable targets for protecting people from climate risks, especially extreme heat. The group wants those plans to give priority to older people, children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses. It also highlights people facing social and economic disadvantages. HEAL has urged the EU to dedicate funding to health and climate resilience under the bloc’s 2028 to 2034 long-term budget.
Moderna begins human testing of a Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine during the DR Congo outbreak. The clinical trial will be conducted at three sites across Canada, enrolling approximately 80 healthy adult participants. Researchers aim to evaluate the vaccine’s safety profile, tolerability, and its capacity to elicit an immune response. It is important to note that this Phase 1 trial will not determine the vaccine’s efficacy in preventing infection, as such studies are primarily focused on early safety data. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations has pledged up to $50 million to support preclinical research, the clinical trial itself, and the manufacturing of additional research doses. WHO reported 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths in DR Congo through July 30, with at least 651 recoveries recorded by that date. Updated statistics from CEPI on August 4 indicated the number of infections had surpassed 3,800, with deaths exceeding 1,700. The outbreak has impacted 49 health zones within Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. Among these, 33 zones reported recent infections, with Ituri accounting for 88% of all confirmed cases.
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak. Both patients fell ill prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on Aug. 3, describing them as fatalities related to cyclosporiasis involving persons with underlying health problems. The total number of cases in Michigan includes all reports during the investigation and remains subject to adjustment. Federal data typically encompass laboratory-confirmed cases and can differ from state figures that also include probable cases. Federal authorities are also probing a nine-state Cyclospora outbreak connected to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, nine states had reported a combined total of 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom had reported exposure to Taco Bell. In that count, at least 98 patients required hospitalization. The onset of illness ranged from June 22 to July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two deaths, which had not been reflected in the detailed federal totals released on July 24. Recall targets iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from U.S. stores and markets. The recall encompassed several food-service products as well as Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at select Walmart outlets. The use-by dates affected ranged from July 18 through Aug. 3. Between June 29 and July 16, Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the impacted lettuce to 27 states, and
