KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – In a bid to support Nepal following devastating floods, the United Nations alongside humanitarian partners are launching an emergency appeal seeking $49.6 million. This four-month initiative aims to assist 84,270 individuals affected by the disaster that occurred on August 26. The targeted population includes 19,284 households across 17 municipalities in six districts. Nearly 40% of those in need are children. The response efforts concentrate on the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha and Tanahu. Meanwhile, authorities in Nepal continue ongoing relief and recovery operations across the impacted regions.

The calamity was triggered when a glacial collapse resulted in a powerful surge of water, mud and debris sweeping through communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and neighboring zones. As of September 6, over 1,300 fatalities have been reported across Nepal, with approximately 5,000 people still missing as rescue efforts proceed. Search teams have also investigated hydropower tunnels and settlements buried in mud. Survivors are being found days after the floods struck, providing some hope amid ongoing tragedy.
Infrastructure including roads, bridges, homes, schools, power networks and local water systems has suffered extensive damage. Some mountain communities remain isolated due to transport links that have been destroyed or blocked. The emergency appeal supports Nepal’s government-led efforts to address these challenges, covering shelter, food, healthcare, clean water, sanitation and protection. Additionally, aid organizations plan to assist with electricity access and rural livelihoods, while winter preparedness forms an essential part of the four-month humanitarian strategy.
Focus on Essential Services in Relief Strategy
The appeal allocates funds for direct cash transfers where local markets remain functional for affected families. Relief agencies are also ready to provide cold-weather shelter materials and portable solar power equipment. Water-related needs include repairs, purification systems and hygiene supplies. Health interventions focus on emergency treatment and nutritional support. Protection services are set to assist children separated from their families. Food aid and livestock support are also included, addressing immediate community needs following the Nepal floods.
Northern Nepal continues to pose logistical difficulties, as damaged roads and bridges hinder relief efforts into upper Rasuwa. Some communities can only be accessed on foot. Recent assessments identified 3,844 displaced individuals living at 34 displacement sites across four regions. The evaluations also noted 4,288 affected households, including 2,886 displaced households. These figures reflect the ongoing demand for shelter, water, food and essential services as relief efforts scale up in response to the disaster.
Emergency Supplies Mobilize to Support Affected Areas
UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency relief supplies in Kathmandu on September 4, destined for distribution among affected communities. The cargo included water tanks, hygiene kits, water treatment supplies, diarrhea treatment equipment, tents, winter clothing and educational materials. Trucks have begun transporting these items toward Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. The aid aims to ensure safe water access, disease prevention, healthcare and educational support for children and families impacted by the floods.
The $49.6 million appeal encompasses ten humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security accounts for approximately $7.94 million, while water and sanitation needs total around $7.9 million. Health requirements are estimated at about $7.6 million, logistics and emergency telecommunications at roughly $7.33 million, and shelter needs about $7.1 million. These key areas constitute the majority of the appeal as Nepal mobilizes resources to respond to one of its most severe recent flood disasters.
